Pick your classic Brazilian Grand Prix

Mr personal fave is the 2003 race, the craziest race i have ever seen!! The race started wet, but the trak was drying, and a river ran across turn 3, Button Schumacher and many other drivers all one by one, lap after lap come to grief in the tyre wall.
then the race was red flagged after a huge crash by Webber running up to the start finish line, Alsonso then collected his stray tyre and had a huge crash himself.
Fisichella was declaed the winner in his Jordan, his car caught fire in Parc Ferme, but confusion ensued - No-body was sure wether Fisichella or Raikkonen won, Raikkonen took the top step, but at the following GP handed the trophy to Fisi, for what was Jordan's last win in F1

Out of the choices, I'll go for 1982. Surely 2003 has to be there though. I know its in the ITV era but couldn't you just show an 8 minute clip of it?

Where are Brazil '01 and '03? These were two of the greatest races in modern times, the first because it launched Juan Pablo Montoya into F1 stardom with his glorious pass of Schumi before being clouted up the rear by Jos The Boss before DC took an absolutely heroic victory, outpacing the rain meister at over a second a lap, before overtaking him in a quite outstanding move utilising Marques' Minardi - this move was every bit as ballsy and brilliant as Hakkinen's pass on Schummel Schumi in Spa the previous year, but got nowhere near the recognition.

Brazil '03 was in my opinion, second only to Japan '05 in the greatest race of the last decade. It had it all - horrendous conditions, great racing, huge accidents and a shock winner. It was also the turning point of David Coulthard's career - had the race gone the distance he would have been leading the championship entering the European season and as DC was always a driver who needed every ounce of confidence he could get, he could well have gone on to win the title that year. As it was, the race got halted early, in his own words he 'hit the mini-bar hard that night' then by the time we got to Imola his yips had started, Kimi got the upper hand on him, after which he never truly recovered.

'93 was a quality wet race, but it didnt have the twists and turns of '03, nor the shock winner. And as for 1994, there was little going on other than that big crash involving Irv, Brundle and The Boss. Senna gallantly chased Schumi, but there was little on-track action to speak of. I realise since you can't show post-'97 races in full here there needs to be a bit of tactical voting, but i'd far rather watch 10 mins of Brazil '01 or '03 than a full half hour of 1994.

1993 would probably be my pick.

AB, I'm pretty sure the Ligier driver involved in the 4 car accident was Eric Bernard.

2008 was a cracker, but I got my recording stashed away somewhere.

My choice is 1993. 2008 was dramatic but as it was only last year it's not old enough to need reminding of what happened.

2006 should have been a choice as well, that was a great race, seeing Schumacher come all the way from the back and his passing manoeuvre on Raikkonen with 5 laps left. Guess some of the races have to be saved for the upcoming seasons though.

Would love to see 1982, although I think 2008 has to be one of my favourite GPs of all time.

To be honest 2008 was only dramatic for the last few hundred yards and as joe strummer has pointed out too recent and too oft repeated. Just a request from an older F1 fan on the more popular, older (proper) tracks, could we leave out this decade as apart from the very new (young) fans most have been seen too recently and repeatedly to the point of boredom. Although i am still a schumey fan it would be nice, as i am sure you have a much wider range of clips from earlier decades, to see some of the great racing drivers from the past.

Many of these drivers did not have the benefit of all the electronic aids that were available in the 2000s, and in my opinion needed more car control skill than the current crop. I would like to see some of the under 25's currently in F1 attempt a few laps at either Suzuka or Interlagos in a JPS Lotus or 70's/80's Turbo Renault, that drivers like Mario Andretti Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell and Martin Brundle had to deal with, which they did successfully!

As there are many newer tracks added to the calender which would give only the options of viewing from this decade, this would give a nice balanced experience, catering for younger fans who are perhaps more interested in the more recent races. I have seen some comments on past "pick your classic Grand Prix" somewhat confusing as quite often younger fans chose recent GP's giving the reason that the others were of less interest as they occurred before they were born????

Anyway would like to say thanks to Andrew and the team for giving us the opportunity to relive some of these classic races. More Andretti/De Angelis and Hunt/Fittipaldi/Sir Jackie Stewart please.

I'll vote for 1982, for sentimentiality. I know one half Jacarepagua has been demolished already, and I think I'm right in saying that the other half will be a victim of Rio's successful Olympic bid. Perhaps not a classic circuit, but did provide some great racing and drama, and also housed the most random oval circuit I've come across, which was good for some classic champ car racing.

Despite the tragedies of Villeneuve and Paletti and Colin Chapman, and Pironi's crash, 1982 must have been one of the most dramatic season ever, judging by the number of times the races have cropped up here.
Brazil, Monaco, Austria, Germany, have all been nominted, and then there's San Marino too.

1993-Wasn't this the first time the safety car had been used since that Canadian farce in the 1970s?

2003 is the obvious 1 missing from the list. I remember it got massive viewing figures because it over ran and everyone else tuned in for Corrie! 2004 wasn't bad, and the tension of the last 3 years mad great too. Obviously any chance to see the 1979 or 1980 races on the older 5 mile Interlagos would be great; you can still see the outline of the circuit on google earth. I wonde rwhat it would be like if it got restored?

I still get goosebumps re-watching the 2008 closing stages, remembering how I was jumping up and down shouting at the TV to make Lewis hurry up... but I agree it is too recent and I too have a copy of it to watch at my leisure.

'08. Yes it's ITV era, yes it's recent - who cares? The drama of that race is just unbeatable!

Tough choices as there has been many brilliant races (Mostly because it started and more recently finished the season. 94 is best remembered for that crash with Irvine, Brundle and Verstappen and Senna spinning out). I'll choose '89 and '93 because i've not seen those races yet.

2008's renewal (at least the closing stages) constitutes one of the greatest sporting moments ever. Please do include it.

I know the footage will be grainy but it will be very nice to see GV in his Ferrari again, even if we know the eventual outcome will see it in the crash fencing.

Also one of the last outings for the famous FW07 and the begining of Keke Rosberg being regarded as truly quick driver.

The cars that year were insane though. Ground effect, full "fixed" skirts with virtually no suspension movement...ouch.

After that race GV was talking to Nigel Roebuck about the perils of the latest generation of cars and how the cornering speeds were too high. He was commenting on the different tracks and how the drivers would be effected by the G force. Brands Hatch he reckoned would be "something else and I expect Zolder will be quite a good killer" How sad that his words were so prophetic.

Where's 2003?! All of them except 2008 are before I can remember, so based on your descriptions, I'll go for '89, but all of them would be good!

My vote will be for 1993 because it was a dramatic race when the rain came in.

Why is 2008 being featured now? Again, I thought it would featured in the last classic f1 series of the season.

2008 is easily the most dramatic title decider in history. BUT - it's too recent, has been shown too many times and if I ever want to see it again, the DVD will cover me for that. That said, we'll still be talking about it for years!

I am really dissappointed! The 2003 Brazilian GP is my absolute favourite! And why showing last years race? It is supposed to be classic? Not a fan of Hamilton and just because he is English this GP has been picked!!! What about respect for Felipe he nearly died this year!

You didn't mention that Johnny Herbert finished fourth on his debut in 1989 (almost finished 3rd!) whilst still recovering from his horrendous F3000 crash at Brands.

1993 was a classic, and featured another heroic drive from our Johnny, dicing for 3rd with Schumi in the closing stages.

I'd choose 1989 then 1993.

It has to be 2008 - the most "on the edge of your seat" race I have ever seen. If you just show the closing laps, watching the emotions of the families in the Ferrari and McLaren teams, even the commentators not believing what they were seeing - amazing climax to the season - brilliant.

As I've never seen any highlights of it, I'll vote for 1982.

1989 would be my first choice. An absolute classic drive by Mansell to give an unexpected win on his debut for Ferrari.

I would agree with some of the other comments made that 2003 should be included in this selection as it was one of the best Brazilian GP's I can remember, but out of the short list given I would choose 1993.

2001 was also a cracker and Montoya's first overtake on Schumacher to take the lead, shame he got taken out when lapping Verstappen!!

Id love to see the extended highlights of the 1989 race for a few reasons

- It was Mansells first win for Ferrari - on his debut for the team !!!

- In my opinion the Ferrari 639/640 was the most beautiful Formula 1 car ever designed

- Seeing a great win by a dogged Brit win will spur us all on and rally around our Jense

I'd say last year's simply because it decided the title so dramatically. In hindsight, the 1993 one didn't make a huge amount of difference as Prost went on to win the title anyway. I guess it holds sentimental value though because obviously Senna was dead within a year. It may well have been a better race (I didn't see it, sadly), but nothing can ever be more dramatic than a title being decided on the final lap of the final after one of those involved has already crossed the line thinking he's done enough.

I believe you've missed out some hidden gems in the 80s there, Andrew. Although 89 is always remembered for Mansell's pass, but there are some other thrilling races from that decade to look into for next year.

I'm voting for 1993, with the huge deluge creating absolute mayhem towards the end. Once the track had dried, Herbert versus Schumacher was a great spectacle.

What a ludicrous comment. Just because you personally don't like Hamilton doesn't mean that you can deny the timelessness of the race. Your personal opinion of someone is absolutely irrelevant when analysing an event such as this. So no, Benson will not be changing his mind and nor should he be.

Also, what do you mean "show respect to Massa, he nearly died this year"? What's that got to do with anything? This was the championship-deciding race from last season, of which he was a part of. Are you suggesting it should be omitted just because he failed to win it and has since suffered ill fortune? If you are, you're very blinkered.

Anyway, my vote is for 1982 first and 1993 second. Like many, I have 2008 taped already, and to echo BulletMonkey, massive respect to Massa, even though I was overjoyed Hamilton was champ.

1982 for me because I'm also a Gilles Villeneuve fan.

How about 1980 though, where he got a scorching start and lead for a whole lap at the old Interlagos in that wreck, the Ferrari T5 ? Admittedly, it's only one lap and the rest of the race was quite forgettable, but the first 5 minutes would do !

It's been a great year of highlights, these are great choices. How much better would last year have been if Hamilton had've lost it..

To clarify, I was referring to f1iguana's post, in that I respected Massa's win, but agree with BulletMonkey his misfortune this year is no reason to veto this race.

Out of those choices I have to go for '93, but I agree with the previous comments that '03 was an absolute classic. He may have crashed out, but Webber managed to avoid coming to grief on the river flowing across the track out of turn 3 that claimed so many, including Schumacher.

I agree with people's comments about 2003 but its not an option, so I'll vote for 1993 as I've not seen highlights of that one

I would like to see the 2008 finale.. One of the most nerve-wracking finals that one could think of.

1982 - a great year (in terms driver quality), race seems interesting and wouldn't mind watching/reminding

1989 - Mansell worked hard for that win, had to overtake Prost a couple of times because he was 2-stopping, IIRC

1993 - another great year, brilliant drive from Senna and brilliant battle for third place onwards.

I would love to see 1991 race - hard to believe it was Senna's first win on home soil! And he did it the hard way! He had gearbox gremlins and had to drive some corners in sixth though luckily Williams had similar gremlins. As soon as he crossed the finish line the fans poured onto the track!

Agree, Jacarepagua is somewhat underated due to its notorious bumpy track surface but it has some super quick sweepers that destroyed your neck muscles and a long back straight for overtaking.

A shame its being destroyed, the track has great racing history to it.

Gilles hated those cars. Had no enjoyment driving round quick corners flat out. Ironic considering the recent age of electronic aids.

1989 was a classic, coming after the McLaren domination of 1988, it provided a fantastic start to the atmo era. Although it was a false dawn as McLaren came back strongly at Imola.

Also, i think Brazil 1989 had the closet top 6 finishers in history!

I've seen some clips of 1982 but not the whole Grand Prix programme, so my vote goes to 82.

Re #36 - Giancarlo Baghetti won on his debut for Ferrari at the 1961 French Grand Prix, and after Mansell in 1989, Kimi Raikkonen won on his debut at the 2007 Australian Grand Prix (I think).

My first choice is 1989 and my second is 1982 - I've never seen the Rio track before so it'll be interesting to see what it was like. Is it true that it has been / will be demolished for the 2016 Olympics?

What a pity that there are only ever five choices for Classic Grand Prix because I think that most of the Brazilian Grand Prix that I've watched over the last decade are classics - e.g. 2003 was a great race, 2006 (Schumacher's final race and charge through the field), and 2007 (three-way championship decider). 2001 (Montoya and Schumacher + Verstappen) and 2002 (Schumacher and Montoya opening lap incident) have classic moments as well.

2008 was eventful for all of 5 laps and is still very much in the public eye and not really needed for nostalgia purpose. You could of been forgiven for including it if there was no better grand prixs, but...

...you have missed out 2003! One of the best grand prixs of all time let alone just Brazilian ones! That race was pure drama as soon as the safety car pulled in from the start.

Schumi, Button & Montoya all getting caught out at Turn 3, Rubens running out of fuel as he was winning. Fisichella's absolute storming drive to win with arguably the second worse car on the grid....it just goes on.

2008 was eventful because of the last couple of laps but the preceeding events were pretty processional. I fail to see what 1993 had to offer too apart from displaying Prost's complete inability to drive in the rain (but you could choose any number of races for that!)

My vote out of that selection has to be for 1989. Mansell on his Ferrari debut wins against all the odds. Awesome! And put Mansell straight into Ferrari folklore.

It has to be 2008 - But is there any chance you could show it with the TV commentary of Martin Brundle and James Allen? Every time I hear Martin say YES I get goose bumps, no offence to the 5Live team but I would really like to hear that again, you seem to be able to have access to some of the ITV commentary so please sort it for this.

I'll go for 1989 please - I was 13 at the time, with a love of Ferrari but as they hadn't been doing too well since I started following F1, I had also been supporting Mansell. Finally the two combined and I could have something to celebrate. I'd love to see it again.

My second choice is 1982 purely because I love reminiscing over the old races, particularly those before the mid-80s as I was too young to remember them. Love seeing how big the cars were and how chaotic the pits seemed.

But 1989 would be my favourite.

My favourite Brazil GP, although I did not notice it on your list, was I think Montoya's first year in F1 and he just barged past Schuey at the first corner following a safety car period. I am guessing it was 2000/1.

But to pick from the list you speak of then it has to be 1993. Senna's last proper race at home (I do not count his few attempts in 1994, which ultimately led to his sad demise), that big incident with Andretti who seemed to go on and make a habit of it!

The Pan-American games were held in Rio in 2007, and the bottom half of the track was used for the new stadium and it's car park. According to the link to Jacarepagua in Andrew's article, they announced the rest of it would be destroyed for the Olympics. I think the Brazilian touring cars still held a race there this year, but last week's announcement probably signals the real end.

In fairness, the track was very much underused anyway, since motogp and the Champ Car series stopped visiting it. The 80s heyday seem futher away than the years suggest, and it's probably better used as an olympic site now, as long as the facilities are used after the games, as they so often aren't.

i would say 2003 coz that was a classic and more my era, however the older races sound just as good

Toss up between 89 and 93, but I think I will plump for 93. While 08 was a corker too barring the last few laps the race wasn't all that great. Plus the fact its always nice to see races from the good ole days!

I'll go with 2008, not felt tension like that for a long time, just the site of Timo slowing round the final few corners!! Immense!

Why isn't 2003 there? (OK, I know it wouldn't have had extended highlights, but that race was one of the best this century).

It has to be 1989 with Mansell or 1982 with Villeneuve.

I would also like to mention that I think the 2007 world championship finale in Brazil would also be a worthy entry in future with Kimi Raikkonen winning the title from nowhere or perhaps Schumacher's bad luck in 2006 and his amazing drive from nearly a lap down to be pipped by Alonso.

im very surprised 2003 isnt in there. it would get my vote for the best brazilian GP. apart from that it has to be 2008, but that was nowhere near as good as 03...

there is a video on YT of the track (search the circuit name, its titled in portuguese) from this year of bikes using the shortened track, and with a massive great Stadium standing on the first section of the GP lap, turns 3/4 of the speedway. brings a tear to the eye...

Andrew, Does the beeb have any footage of any races before 1979 left in its archive at all? If so, could you let us know what? For next year, I, persoanlly, would love to see races before 1979 when possible. Thus far, we have seen the late 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's with the exception of the 1976 Japanese GP. If there ever is an opportunity to rebroadcast a genuine old race before 1979, that would just be magic. So many legends such as Stewart, Rindt, Peterson, Fittipaldi, Hunt. I would like to see more of those.

I've got to go for 2008! But in the lst four hundred metres, Crofty totally missed Hamilton passing Glock at Juncao, which is my only criticism of having BBC Five Live comms. But apart from that, that's my first choice.

But maybe extended highlights of 1993, if possible! And maybe 2003.

I cannot remember any races, except 08, but by the sounds of it 1993 must have been a real cracker so I shall vote for that one. Watching all the classic races gets me pumped up for the race weekend, great work!

Well, another time when I way that there are races that are not on the list that should be ('01 & '03, with other possiblities).

Also, it's another time when I feel I'm the kid in sweet shop.

I'll narrow it down to '82 & '89 (though the others are great).

I'm a Mansell fan. The '82 race was an apsolute classic.

This is coming from a die-hard Fisichella fan! Supported him since 1996 and fans like me need all the good memories we can get!

That really was an epic race, when turn 3 (I think) became the most expensive car park ever with all the cars that aquaplaned off there.

Last year was a pinacle of the sport as was 2003, those two are easily the best. I always remember 1999 though. The Barrichello jinx hit when he was leading in a Stewart, hope it does not strike again for him, want the title to go to Abu Dhabi.

Next year, lets have a race from the old Interlagos. Would love to see longer highlights on what was ferocious circuit.

bit of a cliché but last years race was pretty much as good as it gets for Brazil!
1993 was a good race, a few incidents and great to see Senna doing the business in a far from competetive car.

only other one I can remember is 2003 which was pretty good. Isn't it amazing that all the good races at Interlagos have happened when its rained!

My opinion:
Best was 2007.
Three drivers were fighting for the chapionship and Raikkonen won championship in memorable way.
2003 was very interesting race in very difficult circumstances becouse of hard rain.
But best was 2007.

My first ever F1 race was Brazil 2003, and I would love to see highlights of the race.

Although it would be comfusing for BBC to announce who the winner is, as Fisi did no press conference when he was announced as the winner.

But in Belgium 08, BBC just spoke to Hamilton and announced him a sthe race winner for classic gp's, so i suppose BBC could have announced Kimi as the winner in the BRAZIL GP03 Classic gps

Couldn't agree more, Brazil 01 was my favourite race of all time, DC's move was as great if not greater than Mika's one Schumacher whilst going round Zonta at Spa the previous Year, Coulthard did an identical move but in the wet against the best wet weather driver in f1 or supposedly do. It had little schumacher and barrichello colliding infamously and as you said Montoya's baptism into f1 was here, only to be cruelly shunted out by the out of control Arrows.

2003 is the same, an unpredictable wet race that had everyone leading the race. Everyone had turns as fast and slow, Montoya, Schumacher and Kimi all fast in the opening stages before the first two aquaplaned as did half the grid at the 'dangerzone' that was turn three. From then on it was Barrichello vs Coulthard, the Brazilian making the most of Coulthards blistered tyres to take the lead only for his gearbox to fail him. That left Coulthard way out in front before pitting, Fisichella took Raikonnen and then Alonso crashing at an already no-go area after Webber's incident rought the end of the gp and Fisichella declared winner (DC was provisionally leading though and would have won if it'd gone the distance.) Full of crashes, overtakes (both Alonso and Kimi going round the outside of Ralf Schumacher), aquaplaning and loads more - a race which didn't stop the entertainment.

Tell me how 08 which was rank apart from the last three laps can come ahead of either grand prix please Andrew or were you hibernating between 2001 and 2003.

I would love to see 2008 again. I haven't actually seen it since last year and it seems impossible to find it in any length on YouTube. Could you extend the highlights as much as possible (I appreciate it isn't as easy as uploading an old 'Grand Prix', but this is a special race). Also, could you get the ITV commentary on it, as James and Martin actually called it right and Five Live didn't (not very often ITV gets one over on the BBC).
As for the races left out, I have to say if I'd had the option, 2001, '03 and '06 would have been options. I know they are all relatively recent, but they are all great races. More exciting than 1994 from what I remember.

1993, an overall great and classic race.
2001, for launching Montoya into the F1 world.
2003, for being amazingly hectic.
1991, for the battle between Senna and Patrese at the end of the race.

Disappointed 2003 isn't in here aswell as 2007. For 2008 would it bepossible to break the rulesslightly and use the iconic ITV coverage? The quote "And is that..Is that Glock? Is thast Glock going slowly it is" Is one that will stay with me and many others forever. Also for this race it would be nice to see the scenes afterwards especially the podium ceremony and Lewis celebratinghis title.

Why is 2008 a choice if 2003 isn't there? 2003 was one of the best races of the decade whilst 2008 was only good in the last few laps.

Absolutely amazed that 2003 is not on this list - would be on my list of the top 5 races of all time!

The 2008 Brazillian GP was one of my favourites ever, it was exciting the weather was unpredictable and the stakes were incredibly high. I remember this race very well and since I want to see full highlights of a race I will vote for...

It was a close decision between 93 and 94, I think the full highlights of the 93 race will be more entertaining.

surely there are too many great Brazilian GPs for just a choice than 5. we have the five already selected, plus 2003 and 2001. My personal choice is 08, greatest F1 finle ever.
