  3. 'An honour to be nominated'

Sports Personality of the Year 2018, Geraint Thomas on Radio 5 live: "It's unbelievable. I think I did waffle a bit in my speech, didn't I?"

"I'd just talked myself out of it, to be honest. I guess I thought: 'nah, it's not going to happen',

"It was honestly an honour just to be there and be a part of the six as I've never been nominated. It was just an amazing moment."

Adam Bailey: Congratulations Geraint Thomas, a very worthy winner. He has always been willing to sacrifice his own ambitions to help his own teammates. To win #TDF2018 was an incredible achievement, especially considering he had to first win a battle for leadership within Team Sky.

Sach Grant: Netball doesn’t have to be your sport or your thing. Nothing can take away what was achieved at the Gold Coast. It would be great if people could just respect the achievement without trying to belittle it

  8. Cult hero in a waistcoat

The famous waistcoat is the question for England manager Gareth Southgate to answer on 5 live: "It's all very, very strange I have to say.

"It was too hot for a jacket and a light blue shirt is not a good look in that heat.

"I actually spoke with my children before I left and said: 'do you think I could get away with wearing that?' and they said: 'dad nobody is going to bothered what you're wearing, so just get on with it!"

  9. 'To celebrate like the fans is special'

Sports Personality's third place finisher Harry Kane says it was the reaction of the fans that made the World Cup so special:

"I remember being that kid down the park or with my mates, watching the World Cup, the Euros, throwing drinks and celebrating like that.

"To be on the pitch and celebrating like that, it was pretty special."

What can England take from their performance in Russia?: "To get so close, it hurts so much when you don't quite get there.

"We believed that were going to go on and bring it home and I know the nation believed it as well.

"To go out like we did, of course it gives us a little bit extra motivation for the next tournament."

Sports Personality contender Jimmy Anderson speaking to Radio 5 live: "It was very nerve-wracking being on the stage but amazing to actually get in the top six. I was a bit speechless with all those top sportsmen and women."

Recently-retired England captain Alastair Cook on former team-mate: "He was a grumpy so-and-so to manage at certain times but I've always said he's [Anderson's] the greatest fast bowler I've ever seen - the most skillful.

"To spend twelve years playing with him was a real privilege."

Kelly: Every year #SPOTYfalsereminds me how great sport is! A night of great inspiration. All were deserving winners but my vote was for Lizzy Yarnold because back at the start of the year when she won her gold I actually cried and watching that video I wanted to all over again.
