  3. BreakingMan charged in connection with Syria preacher death

    A 61-year-old man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting in Wembley of a preacher from Syria, Abdulhadi Arwani.

    Khalid Rashad, of Monks Park Drive, Wembley, was charged with possession of an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose and possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate.

    He has been remanded in custody to appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

  5. Gang members jailed for 'frenzied' double murder

    Two east London gang members have been jailed for a "frenzied, adrenaline and probably a drug-fuelled" double murder, carried out in order to obtain their rivals' client list.

    Alex Bernard, 21, and Casey Jones, 19, lured drug dealers Aaron Carriere, 21, and Josiah Manful, 20, to a quiet street in Leytonstone, east London, and stabbed them 24 times in less than 60 seconds on 1 March, 2014.

    A judge at the Old Bailey jailed them both for life with Jones ordered to serve a minimum of 34 years and Bernard ordered to serve a minimum of 31 years.

    The Museum of London is comparing 500 skeletons of medieval Londoners with 500 skeletons from industrial-era city dwellers to see what impact mechanisation may have had on our bodies.

  7. Flash crash trader remains in custody

    A financial trader accused by US authorities of contributing to the 2010 Wall Street crash has failed to post bail and must remain in custody in London this weekend.

    Navinder Singh Sarao, 36, from Hounslow, is wanted by US authorities on charges of wire fraud, commodities fraud and market manipulation.

  9. Rahman court judgement 'should be respected'

    Ed Miliband told me he disagrees with Ken Livingston's view (which aired on Eddie Nestor's Drivetime show last night) that the decision of Tower Hamlets voters to elect Lutfur Rahman should "not have been overturned by an unelected bureaucrat".

    He said: "I disagree with Ken on this one. I think the court has made its judgement. It's reached its findings and it should be respected."

  11. Driver jailed after evading £60 speeding fine for five years

    A driver who changed his name by deed poll to 'Mr X 'in order to evade a £60 speeding fine has been jailed for perjury and perverting the course of justice.

    Ashley X, of Clyfford Road, Ealing, was filmed driving his Honda sports car at 67mph (107kmph) in a 50mph (80kmph) zone of the M11 in Essex in 2009.

    "For five years he tried to deny the offence," police said, by claiming that his cousin was behind the wheel and forging a letter to support the bogus account. X has been sentenced to nine months in jail and was ordered to pay £1,200 in court costs.

    Congratulations to actor Alan Rickman, 69, has married his partner of 50 years Rima Horton.

    The pair met when they were at school when he was 19 and she was 18. They have lived together in London for 50 years and recently wed in secret in New York, he told the German magazine Bild.

    Ed Miliband said in response to claims of negative campaigning by the Boris Johnson: " I'm not worried about it because I think it defeats the Conservative party. I think Mr Positive has gone negative if that's what's happened to Boris Johnson. It shows its a desperate campaign and they're losing the argument."

    Following Mr Johnson's claim that any future Labour/SNP deal would damage London's economy, Mr Miliband said: "HSBC has said the number one risk is getting out of the European Union and Boris Johnson's party is drifting towards exist from the European Union. That's the biggest threat.

    "Frankly Boris is trying to stir up England versus Scotland. He should be defending the UK."

    "These combined elections will be held on 11 June 2015. They will be delivered by John Williams, the council's acting returning officer, who was cleared of all allegations related to fraudulent practice in the delivery and administration of the 2014 Mayoral elections."

  31. Man killed in knife and hammer attack

    Ben Fasina was attacked with knives and hammers in Thamesmead, last October, the Old Bailey heard.

    They deny all charges.

  32. Accused 'ordered attack from prison'

    A 25-year-old man was murdered in a "brutal" revenge attack ordered by a convicted drug dealer from his prison cell, a court has heard.

    Steven Ngolo, 22, was serving a sentence for supplying cannabis and allegedly gave instructions to attack Ben Fasina who had apparently robbed a low-level drug courier.

    Ngolo, who was being held in Thameside Prison in south-east London, was livid when he heard about the robbery and was recorded on his prison phone urging others to take retribution, Mark Fenhalls QC, prosecuting, said.

  34. Rail upgrade 'raises hack risk

    A hi-tech signalling system which will eventually control all of Britain's trains could potentially be hacked to cause a serious crash, according to a scientist who advises the government.

    Prof David Stupples, from City University in London, told the BBC plans to replace ageing signal lights with new computers could leave the rail network exposed to cyber-attacks. UK tests of the European Rail Traffic Management System are under way.

    Police want to trace a cyclist who collided with a woman near Tower Bridge and left her lying face down on the footpath.

    The 44-year-old woman had been walking down Abbey Street with her husband at about 18:00 on 14 April.

    They crossed the road at the junction of Tower Bridge and met an oncoming cyclist on the footpath. The woman fell to the ground and suffered significant facial injuries, police said.

    "If not for her husband and a member of the public stopping to help she would have been left on that footpath," Sgt David Hunt said.

    Nick Clegg says he hopes HSBC will keep its headquarters in Britain after the country's biggest bank confirmed it's considering moving elsewhere.

  40. Teen in court accused of inciting terrorism

    ABC Europe correspondent Barbara Miller tweets: 14 year-old British boy due to appear at Westminster Magistrate's Court London on charges of inciting acts of terrorism in Australia.

    BBC home affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford says the 14-year-old is the youngest person to be charged with a terrorist offence in the UK.

    The CPS charged the teenager with inciting someone to attack an Anzac parade in Australian and inciting someone to behead someone. Under British law the teenager can't be named because of his age.

  42. Man dies in house fire in Oval

    A man has died in a house fire in Oval which took hold in the ground floor, first floor, second floor and roof.

    About 60 firefighters tackled the fire in Richborne Terrace at about 03:10. It was under control by 04:58 but a man was declared dead at the scene. London Fire Brigade is investigating the cause.

  44. Tower Hamlets petitioners 'stood to lose everything'

    "We had to be amateur detectives" collecting statements after the election, lead petitioner Andy Erlam has told Vanessa Feltz on BBC London 94.9.

    "If we had lost we would have been penniless, but injustice makes your blood boil."

    Mr Erlam said he and the other petitioners had to overcome intense community intimidation in order to present their legal challenge to hold , with some being warned "your families will be murdered if you give evidence". But the petitioner's were successful and the High Court declared the election void.

  45. How do you challenge a corrupt election?

    Lead petitioner Andy Erlam has been telling Vanessa Feltz on BBC London 94.9 how he went about his 'David and Goliath fight' to challenge the fraudulent Tower Hamlets election result and take on the corrupt "mayor".

    Because Mr Erlam was standing as a mayoral candidate himself in May 2014 he was allowed access to different polling stations and what he saw there shocked him.

    Mr Erlam said he was appalled to see people being given election leaflets on their way into the polling station and even saw people being accompanied into the polling booth in Tower Hamlets.

    He immediately complained to election officers and police and was "astonished" to be told no complaints had been made at the end of the day. In fact 131 complaints had been made about the election on 22 May.

  46. Police in 1975 double murder reward offer

    The Metropolitan Police has offered a £40,000 reward for information on the linked murders of a bunny girl and a teenager.

    Eve Stratford, 22, who worked at London's Playboy club, was found with her throat slashed in her home in Leyton, east London, in March 1975.

    Six months later, Lynne Weedon, 16, died after being attacked and raped near her home in Hounslow, west London. A link was made in 2006 after matching DNA was found on the victims.

  47. 'No racism in Tower Hamlets?'

    The deputy mayor of Tower Hamlets, Oliur Rahman, says yesterday's High Court Ruling against Lutfur Rahman (no relation) came as a great shock and the former mayor may yet seek a judicial review.

    Oliur Rahman said he respected the judge's decision but added: "If people say there is no racism in Tower Hamlets, they are very much mistaken.

    "There is institutional racism ... They are very much mistaken if they turn round and say there is no racism."

    Giving his judgement yesterday Electoral Commissioner Richard Mawrey QC said, "On past form, it appears inevitable that Mr [Lutfur] Rahman will denounce this judgment as yet another example of the racism and Islamophobia that have hounded him throughout his political life. It is nothing of the sort."

    Police have named a man and teenager who died in a motorcycle collision in east London.

    Justas Pranckunas, 20, and Redas Dainys, 16, both from Lithuania, were killed in the incident on Woodford Avenue in the early hours of Saturday morning.

    Post-mortem examinations established cause of death for both males as multiple injuries.

    A £20,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gang responsible for the Hatton Garden heist.
