Three days ago, David Cameron pledged £20m to teach Muslim women English. We'll be finding out how that message is being received by those he's targeting.

Equipment from the recently-closed Kellingley Colliery near Knottingley is to get a new lease of life in West Yorkshire.

A man who tried to smuggle cocaine with a street value of £160m into the UK has had his prison sentence increased.

James Hill, 31, from Ilkley, was jailed for six years for conspiracy to import the drug at Leeds Crown Court last September.

His prison term has now risen to 11 years after his case was referred to the Court of Appeal as being unduly lenient by the Attorney General.

A plan which could lead to the closure of Huddersfield’s A&E unit could save local NHS services £240m.

Police are appealing for information after a hot air balloon was stolen from Normanton golf course at the start of last week.

How's this for a heartwarming tale on a cold Thursday in January? Two children from Rotherham have sent a card, cleaning materials, a torch and batteries for the flood victims of Calderdale.

Six-year-old Hannah, and Gabrielle, 11, sent the box to the Town Hall in Hebden Bridge and they said: "I am sorry you had all the floods" and "I hope something in this box will help you". How sweet is that?

The developers of the former Odeon cinema site in Bradford have been dealt a major blow by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They've been turned down for a £5m grant.

The Community Foundation for Calderdale says it's raised more than £1m in three weeks, after appeals to help flood victims get back onto their feet.

Machinery from the last deep coal mine in the UK has been saved to be used in a new, smaller drift mine nearby.

The New Crofton Co-operative Colliery is to open near Wakefield in June.

A coal-cutting machine from the defunct Kellingley colliery, near Knottingley, is now in storage for use on the new site.

Jonathan Clarke, the co-operative's director, says the "perfectly serviceable machine would get a new lease of life" and not be scrapped.

Tens of thousands of items from Leeds-based Northern Ballet's set and costume stores have been damaged by the Christmas floods. 

The company's main storage warehouse was inundated by up to one metre of floodwater, ruining bespoke handmade costumes and the sets for 20 of their best-loved shows.

They now face the huge task of being ready for this year's season - but they say the show will go on.
