Strong winds easing slowly overnight. Clear spells with one or two showers.
Researchers from the Universities of Sheffield and Warwick have found that using a special gel, which forms a soft network of tiny "worm"-like particles in water, prevents damage to red blood cells that have been frozen at low temperatures for long periods of time.
The study has been led by Professor Steve Armes (pictured below) from the University of Sheffield and Professor Matthew Gibson from the University of Warwick.

Jon McClure, the lead singer of the Reverend and the Makers, has been in Sheffield today trying to sell copies of the Big Issue North.
He's was one of the famous names taking part in something called Vendor Week. I caught up with him outside the Town Hall to see how he was doing.
Sheffield MP invites Business Minister to visit Forgemasters

Clive Betts, Labour MP for Sheffield South East, has invited Business Minister Anna Soubry to visit Forgemasters in Sheffield.
Mr Betts says the South Yorkshire firm has been affected by the downturn in demand for steel products, but it needs to be seen as an essential strategic player in the nuclear, defence and energy sectors.
In a letter to Ms Soubry, he says he hopes the government and the company "might work together in the interests of everyone and the economy".

Tram passengers warned over delays in Hillsborough
The Romanian has only played three times this season, and has not started a game since April 2015.
The 23-year-old joined Wednesday on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia in February 2015.

Border Collie survives septic tank fall in Deepcar

A Border Collie is lucky to be alive after nearly drowning in a septic tank in her owner's garden in Deepcar, near Stocksbridge.
Hazel Higgins and her partner, David Bew, of Manchester Road, discovered 15-year-old Kia’s plight after their other dog became agitated, indicating something was wrong.
Hazel, a former dog agility trainer, eventually found Kia in their 8ft-deep septic tank. The lid had come off due to the recent extreme wet weather.
The couple managed to pull the dog to safety and took her to the vets where she was treated for shock and septicaemia and after two days was able to go home.

I caught up with Jon McClure, the lead singer with Reverend and the Makers, this afternoon in Sheffield.
He's been selling copies of the Big Issue magazine in his home city today.
It's all part of something called Vendor Week which is promoting the work of The Big Issue.
Other well known figures who are taking part in the week across the UK include Belle and Sebastian singer Stuart Murdoch and actress Maxine Peake.

Barnsley Council has joined the other local authorities across South Yorkshire to announce plans to raise council tax from April.
The amount you pay will go up 4% from April, which includes a 2% rise to pay specifically for adult social care.

Chris Neal seeks game time after Doncaster Rovers loan move
The 30-year-old joined Rovers on a 28-day loan and could go straight into the side for tonight's League One home match with Walsall.
Neal told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I need to get out and play some games. My contract is up at the end of the season, so it's important as a goalkeeper to be playing."

Sheffield scientists use new 'worm' gel to preserve tissues and cells
Scientists in Sheffield have developed a new approach for the long-term storage of biological tissue and blood samples, with the aim of making blood transfusions easier.
