Here's another reason why the The Three Queens spectacular was such a big occasion for the city. It was Merseyside Police's new shire horse Arnie's first big event.
Two RNLI lifeboats from West Kirby and Hoylake helped pull the man to safety after he slipped from cliffs on Middle Eye, near Hilbre Island, on Monday.
The man, aged in his thirties, had suffered a back injury and was taken to Aintree Hospital.
Images by some of the most important photographers of the 20th Century - including Bert Hardy, Martin Parr and Tom Wood - will go on display in Kirby Gallery as part of the LOOK 15 photography festival.

Care homes rated good in latest report

Seven care homes in Merseyside and Cheshire have been rated as "good" by the Care Quality Commission in the latest published reports into the quality of care provided by adult social care services across the North.
Homes in Sefton, St. Helens, Warrington and Wirral all received the rating.
All of England's adult social care services are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

A Liverpool gang which targeted lorries in Kent, stealing £200,000 worth of Toblerone from one and £23,000 worth of whiskey from another, have been jailed.
The six men carried out the thefts in Dover in April 2013. They were sentenced to between four years and four years eight months in prison each at Maidstone Crown Court earlier.

Cancer patients to help design new unit

People from Merseyside and Cheshire with experience of cancer are being invited to help design the region's new flagship specialist hospital.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre will open a unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in 2018.
Today, people can give their views at the Transforming Cancer Care event at the Wirral postgraduate centre on the Clatterbridge Health Park.

Rodgers: I'll go if owners want me to

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers accepted his future at the club is in doubt after Steven Gerrard's final match ended in a humiliating defeat.
The Reds said goodbye to captain Gerrard with a 6-1 thrashing at Stoke to finish sixth in the Premier League.
"I've always said if the owners want me to go, then I go," said Rodgers, who has won two of his last nine games.
