Emergency services collaborate to reduce pressure on 999 calls
South Yorkshire fire fighters and police officers are joining forces with Yorkshire Ambulance Service to attend lower priority incidents and reduce the demand on 999 responders.

The "LIFE" team will attend incidents like falls, missing people cases and people at risk of anti social behaviour.
The scheme has been funded by South Yorkshire Fire Authority for six months.
Sheffield decorator sentenced for defrauding solicitors' firm
A local businessman has been sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for a year following an investigation by Sheffield City Council’s Trading Standards into his fraudulent trading.

Lucien Nicholas Carter, of Frickley Road, Sheffield demanded upfront payments of £17,900 for redecorating work at Harthills Solicitors in Rotherham. But less than £4,000 of work was done with faked invoices provided to the firm.

Tiny elephants stampede to Sheffield's Moor Market
You’ve seen the Herd of Sheffield, you’ve seen the Little Herd and now you’re invited to make a brand new Mini Herd for a trail through Sheffield’s Moor Market, on Thursday 11 August.

There are around 40 elephants available, which will all be decorated on Thursday 11 August inside the Moor Market. The decorated elephants will then be part of the market’s Mini Herd, a trail which will take visitors on a hunt around the market with a treat for those who find them all.

It is free to take part and those who design an elephant can claim it once the trail display finishes at the end of the summer.
Sheffield's Forgemasters gets multi million dollar submarine deal
Sheffield Forgemasters has secured contracts worth more than 30 million dollars to make castings for american submarines.

It's the company's largest order for almost two years. Forgemasters has been under economic pressure following the collapse of the offshore oil and gas market and says the orders provide a boost for its Brightside Lane operations.

Police in Sheffield are asking for your help to find missing 75-year-old Alan Booker as concerns grow for his welfare.

Alan was last seen at around 10:00 this morning leaving his home address in the Shiregreen area of Sheffield.
He has not been seen or heard from since, which is very out of character.

Holy Trinity Church in Rothwell, Northamptonshire - home to one of only two 13th Century crypts in the UK - contains the remains of 2,500 people.
Radio carbon dating found some skulls were older than first thought.

But scientists from the University of Sheffield, who "assumed the ossuary was a medieval thing", were also surprised to find bones from the last century.

Barnsley Museums have secured funding of £79,200 from Arts Council England to help develop their charitable organisation.

A 35-year-old was taken to hospital after police were called to Shady Side in Hexthorpe. A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding.
A project to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Sheffield Blitz is looking for volunteers to help with gathering information about what happened during the Blitz.
The two sides are in dispute over staffing changes, which the company says would have no impact on safety and no compulsory job losses.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash says: "RMT will not sit back while nearly 200 members' jobs are under threat and also conditions and safety are put at risk by a franchise which is clearly in financial trouble."
David Horne, managing director for Virgin Trains East Coast, says if a strike does go ahead, services won't be affected.

Lottery backed project seeks Sheffield Blitz memories

A project to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Sheffield Blitz is looking for volunteers to help with gathering information about what happened during the Blitz.
A Sheffield memorial trail is being created at 16 sites around the City with permanent memorial plaques.
Nearly a tenth of Sheffield's population was made homeless on December 12 and 15, 1940 with over 2,000 people killed or wounded.
The project has received £81,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Virgin East Coast strike vote
More on the news that Virgin East Coast rail workers who are members of the RMT union have voted to go on strike in a row over job cuts, working conditions and safety.
The two sides are in dispute over staffing changes, which the company says would have no impact on safety and no compulsory job losses.
