  12. Cat shot with air rifle in Leavesden

    Katy Lewis

    BBC Local Live

Police are looking for witnesses after a cat was shot in Leavesden.

It's believed that Benji, who is seven years old, was shot with an air rifle between 19:30 and 21:00 on 21 July in the High Road area.

He suffered injuries to his internal organs, needing emergency surgery, and is still under veterinary care.

Hertfordshire Police called it an "isolated occurrence" and has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

  13. HS2 rail project 'should be scrapped'

    Katy Lewis

    BBC Local Live

The high-speed HS2 Line through Buckinghamshire should be scrapped because it's likely to be delayed, over-budget poor value for money, according to the Taxpayers' Alliance.

    HS2 train

Chief executive Jonathan Isaby called it a "wasteful vanity project".

He said: "The new prime minister should now be pursuing bold and imaginative policies to boost economic growth and increase productivity - and that positive approach must include scrapping HS2, which has cost taxpayers far too much already."

The Department for Transport (DfT) insisted that the case for the scheme was "absolutely clear", saying it "will create jobs and skills now and will help spread opportunity and growth in the longer-term".

  14. Verulamium lakes: What's causing the silt build-up?

    Katy Lewis

    BBC Local Live

St Albans Council said it had been working with the Environment Agency and the RSPB on a long-term scheme to restore the River Ver to its natural state, which in turn would improve the water flow through the lakes to help prevent build-ups of silt.

    Verulamium lake

    It said the problems were:

    • Slow water flow from the River Ver over the last few decades has meant the lakes are gradually becoming stagnant
    • Feeding birds at the lakes encourages them to stay in the park and disrupts their natural migration patterns - the result is a large tonnage of bird droppings that, together with other organic material, turns into silt

Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles said: “Improving conditions around the lakes is a council priority and I am sure residents will support our efforts to do so.”

  15. New clean-up plan announced for Verulamium lakes

    Katy Lewis

    BBC Local Live

If you've been walking in St Albans' Verulamium Park recently you'll have noticed - and probably smelt - the large build-ups of silt, mainly gathered at the edge of the larger lake near the Fighting Cocks pub and at the bridge that separates the two lakes.

    Verulamium lake

Well, St Albans District Council has just announced it is going to be removing 150 tonnes of it - by mid-August.

The scheme, costing £29,000, will see a tanker positioned near the pumping station opposite Westminster Lodge and a half-mile-long pipe laid out from there to the lakes.

Silt will then be removed by suction and taken to a treatment plant near Redbourn for disposal.

  16. Watford fan Nick Cruwys holds brain injury charity fundraiser

    Justin Dealey

    BBC Three Counties Radio

There probably isn't a Watford fan who doesn't know the name Nick Cruwys.

The Hornets fan from Hemel Hempstead spent four months in hospital with a serious head injury following a match at Wolves last March.

His recovery is ongoing, but this weekend he and his family are putting on an event at Hemel Hempstead FC to raise money for Headway Hertfordshire, a brain injury charity through which Nick has done his rehab.

His wife Jodie tole me: "An occupational therapist comes round weekly to help him with his memory and cognitive skills... she's his fairy godmother, so we just wanted to say thank you."

  17. Vivean Gray death: The St Albans link... sort of

    Katy Lewis

    BBC Local Live

Sad news today as we learned that Vivean Gray - who played Neighbours busybody Mrs Mangel - had died.

I was convinced the actor had moved to Hertfordshire so there was a local link and on looking into it I discovered there was - sort of - but I seem to have confused my fact from fiction.

She appeared in the Australian soap between 1986 and 1988, and when she left her CHARACTER emigrated to St Albans.

    Vivean Gray

Note to self: soaps aren't real - although it seems I'm not the only one to have got a bit mixed up.

Gray gave up acting after the show, complaining of the verbal attacks she received from people who could not distinguish her from her on-screen character.

"I could barely set foot outside my own door without someone screaming abuse at horrid old Mrs Mangel," she was quoted as saying in 1989.

  18. Sheffield Wednesday sign Watford pair

    BBC Sport

Watford midfielder Almen Abdi and left-back Daniel Pudil have both agreed permanent transfers to Sheffield Wednesday.

Swiss Abdi, 29, (pictured) leaves after four years at Vicarage Road, while Pudil, 30, of the Czech Republic spent last season on loan at the South Yorkshire club, helping them to the Championship play-off final.

  19. Stag rescue number two for Buntingford fire station

    Katy Lewis

    BBC Local Live

Stag rescue is becoming a bit of a "speciality" for Buntingford firefighters, who for the second time in two weeks have been called upon to rescue one from water.

Last week they were called to rescue an animal stuck in a swimming pool. This time the animal was "in camouflage" but it again ended in a safe release.

I'm sure they deer-ly hope they don't have to do any more.

    I'll get my coat.

  20. Superman IV Redux is MK Festival's 'lasting legacy'

    Katy Lewis

    BBC Local Live

The re-creation of part of Superman IV in Milton Keynes came about with the help of the Milton Keynes International Festival (MKIF).

    Superman IV Redux

Artist Richard DeDominici had decided to recreate the scenes when he started making films in 2013 but it was taking time to put together due to scheduling filming in people's properties.

It really took off (if you'll pardon the pun) when MKIF got involved and commissioned the Redux which was shot over two days, with a budget of £5,000, using local people in the same locations.

Director Monica Ferguson said the result was "a fabulous mini-movie which leaves a lasting legacy for the festival and also celebrates the way the people of Milton Keynes love being involved in quirky projects".
