With the new series of X Factor just around the corner - kicking off this Saturday to be precise - it's the perfect time to reflect on the fame and fortune of previous contenders...

Sam Bailey, 2013's winner, stopped by Radio 2 yesterday afternoon to chat to Mark Goodier about her music and upcoming tour.

She parted ways with record label Syco last year after one album and has since done panto, a Butlins tour and toured the UK in the musical Chicago, as well as working on her second album due on 16 September.

Any 2016 hopefuls worried about coping with paparazzi etc may be pleased to hear Sam can still go "down the shop in my onesie", and loves every minute...

  9. Dan Croll debuts new track Swim on Radio 1

    BBC Radio 1

Conjuring up what we like to call "lazily-floating-on-a-lilo-in-the-sunshine" vibes, is Dan Croll's new track Swim, which debuted on Annie Mac's show last night as her Hottest Record.

It's the first song from his next album which was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia and is due "very early in the new year".

Dan joined Annie on the phone from Liverpool to chat about the track and revealed:

"It's a song that talks about faithfulness in a relationship... a kind of metaphor of someone swimming off with another person. I was swimming quite a lot at the time so I think that's where the metaphor came from."

Listen to the interview and Swim (with or without a lilo) below...

  10. Proms 2016: the year of the encore

There's still another two weeks left of the Proms but have you had a favourite one so far?

It turns out this year's Proms has been the 'year of the encore'.

From conductors taking a turn at the piano to singing cellists and joke-telling violinists.

Last night Gabriela Montero turned Land of Hope and Glory into "Land of all things in her repertoire" - as you can hear below...

She was performing with the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop.

Handily a list of all the encores has been compiled here.

  12. Will Young releases Summer Covers EP

    Will Young

He might be knee deep in rehearsals for this year's Strictly, but Will Young hasn't turned his back on music, with his new Summer Covers EP available on his website from tomorrow (Friday).

It features covers of artists from Joni Mitchell to The Buzzcocks and was recorded in Dean Street Studios with a jazz band.

Here's why Will, who scored his fourth UK number one album last year with 85% Proof, is putting out the collection...

Quote Message: I really wanted to record some of my many covers I have done over the years, especially following a jazz residency at the 606 Club a few years ago. I had an amazing experience in the studio with an incredible bunch of musicians, recording these tracks live to create this EP. These are just a few songs that say and do something to me, and I hope they do for others too.

He's also got a busy bank holiday weekend - performing live at Carfest South in Hampshire on Friday, Somerset Rocks in Taunton on Saturday 27 August, and both Manchester Pride and Victorious Festival on Sunday 28 August.

Listen back to him performing tracks from the album on Dermot O'Leary's Radio 2 Show earlier this month.

  13. Britney biopic on the way

    Britney Spears

Yet more Britney Spears news for you now (anyone would think she had an album coming out!)... and the Lifetime network in the US has ordered a two-hour biopic of the singer.

We're told Britney (working title) will detail "the tumultuous story of pop icon Britney Spears’ rise to fame, fall from grace and eventual triumphant resurrection, firmly securing her position as one of the world’s greatest entertainers".

So that will include her romance with Justin Timberlake.

Production begins in September in Vancouver and it will be shown on Lifetime in 2017.

We're not sure what Britney thinks about this but BreathHeavy are reporting that representatives for the singer say she will not be contributing to the biopic "nor does it have her blessing."

  14. Legal action over Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa concert

Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa on stage

We told you a couple of weeks ago that fans had been injured when a railing collapsed at a Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa concert in New Jersey.

Now lawyers representing 17 injured people have filed a lawsuit against the venue's operator and the performers claiming they didn't take enough precautions to ensure concertgoers would be safe.

Lawyer Robert J Mongeluzzi said his clients want to prevent future incidents and deserve monetary compensation.

There's no comment from the concert organisers Live Nation due to the legal case.

At the time Snoop and Wiz tweeted their concern for injured fans.

  15. The Blockheads replace The Magic Numbers on festival bill

    The Blockheads

Organisers of October's Musicport Festival in Whitby say The Blockheads have stepped in as new headliners, after The Magic Numbers had to pull out.

A statement says: "Due to a scheduling conflict The Magic Numbers have, with regret, had to withdraw from this year’s festival but in their place we are delighted to announce that The Blockheads will be headlining the Friday night of the festival."

The Blockheads started life as the band behind the late Ian Dury in the 70s, with tracks such as Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick, and have continued to tour since his death in 2000 with Derek Hussey fronting the band.

Check the Musicport website for other recent additions to the line-up and ticket info.

  16. Liam Gallagher announces solo record deal

Liam Gallagher and Warner Bros Records reps and managers - Sam Eldridge, Max Lousada, Nicky Stein, Liam Gallagher, Phil Christie, Debbie Gwyther, Roy Eldridge

We've been hearing a lot from Liam Gallagher this week - check out Tuesday's Music News LIVE for the joy that was his first interview in years with Q Magazine - and today we can bring you news that he's signed a solo record deal.

Warner Bros Records UK - home to Royal Blood, Foals and Biffy Clyro - has confirmed it will release Liam's debut solo album in 2017.

Record company president Phil Christie said: “Liam’s one of the all-time greats - brilliant, distinctive, controversial and captivating.

"The album he’s currently recording is big, bold and heartfelt, and it feels important and culturally relevant."

Ooh. And despite telling people earlier this week he was "not embarking on a solo 'career'" just an album, the former Oasis frontman had this to say on the matter...

Quote Message: Very excited to be signing to the mighty Warner Brothers; looking forward to making some super sweet sounds. Keep the faith!
  17. Statue of Motorhead's Lemmy unveiled at his favourite bar

    Lemmy from Motorhead on stage

If you've ever been lucky enough to sample the delights of the Rainbow Bar and Grill on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip, you may well have stumbled upon Motorhead frontman Lemmy, who spent much of his downtime hanging out at the LA bar.

Now in memory of Lemmy, who died two days after being diagnosed with cancer in December, a life-size bronze sculpture has been unveiled at the renowned rock and roll venue.

It's the result of a crowd-funding campaign which raised more than $22,000 (£16,600).

Dozens of fans turned out to see it, chanting Lemmy's name, along with his girlfriend Cheryl Keuleman and Motorhead's long-time manager Todd Singerman.

Singerman said the Stoke-born rock star and Ace of Spades singer would have been "extremely proud" of his statue.

"I look at him no differently than Johnny Cash, The Beatles and so on. He was real... The way he went on stage was the way he was at home. Go find that today."

Lemmy statue at the Rainbow Bar and Grill

Artist Travis Moore created the sculpture, which took around 20 people five months to build.

Lemmy's girlfriend Keuleman said the Rainbow Bar was his "favourite place in the world".

She told PA: "The Rainbow was Lemmy's home. One of Lemmy's worst fears was that when he died, the world would forget about him. He's now immortal. No one ever will forget about him because he was a god. He was a man, but he was a god."

You can see videos of the statue at Blabbermouth.net

  18. Emeli Sande is finished

Emeli Sande has posted what seems to be a message to fans that her second album is finally finished.

  19. Prince's home to open to public

    Prince

Fans of Prince are going to get the chance to look around his Paisley Park home.

The singer died in an elevator at the 65,000 square-foot complex in Minneapolis in April.

Prince's sister, Tyka Nelson, said: "Opening Paisley Park is something that Prince always wanted to do.

"Only a few hundred people have had the rare opportunity to tour the estate during [Prince's] lifetime.

"Now, fans from around the world will be able to experience Prince's world for the first time as we open the doors to this incredible place."

It will be managed by the company that runs Elvis Presley's Graceland.

A hearing has been scheduled for 20 September as they need planning approval from the city.
