New wildlife charity for north Norfolk

BBC Local Live
A new wildlife conservation charity is being launched in north Norfolk to help protect species under threat on the coast and heathlands.
BBCCopyright: BBC
The Felbeck Trust will be managing sites around the villages of Aylmerton, Sustead and Felbrigg, restoring and managing wildlife habitats. The trust, which promotes the use of traditional skills and materials, will work in partnership with other Norfolk voluntary groups.
Trevor Williams, chairman of the charity, said it would complement the work of the big conservation organisations, not be in competition.
"Birds, mammals and insects have pockets of protected land that they can find and use which will connect to the bigger reserves," he said.

If successful, the trust would be keen to expand locations, initially in north Norfolk.
"The key is to engage in the communities where the small pockets of land lie and get their interest," Mr Williams said.

Cromer's annual fireworks display, which will go ahead on Sunday after being cancelled on New Year's Eve, was set up in 2000 as a way of marking the new millennium.

'Business as usual' at car-damaged health centre
Staff at a health centre near King's Lynn had a lucky escape earlier this afternoon, after a vehicle went into the side of the building.
Ana Weston, practice manager at the Gayton Road Health Centre, said: "Suddenly there was a huge bang, a lot of dust and debris flying about. Fortunately it was in an area of the office where there are cupboards.
"The team were shocked and frozen in place. Then they realised a car had gone into the side of the building.
"It's about halfway in, the rear of the car is parked in our office. There were some staff in the vicinity but they weren't directly working against the wall. Although they were in a state of shock they carried on and kept the service going.
"I can't comment on the driver, but everybody involved has been uninjured by the incident. There were no physical injuries, we've been very fortunate indeed."
Ms Weston said surveyors were "confident" the building would be OK, and the car would be removed shortly.
She said it was business as usual for patients with appointments.

Railway station evacuated
Norwich railway station was evacuated after the fire alarm sounded a short while ago.
Greater Anglia spokeswoman Lucy Wright told me that passengers waited outside the building for 10 minutes, but were allowed back in after there was found to be no sign of any fire.
There will be some delays to train services.
Assault victim in hospital
A man is in hospital after being assaulted in Great Yarmouth last night.
The victim, in his 20s and from the local area, received a puncture wound to his chest and is in a serious, but stable condition, in Papworth Hospital, Cambridgeshire.
The incident is believed to have taken place in the Havelock Road area, near to the red Herring pub, at around 20:30 to 20:45.
Police are carrying out inquiries to establish the circumstances behind the assault, and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
Surgery evacuated after being hit by car

BBC Radio Norfolk
A doctors' surgery in west Norfolk has been evacuated after being hit by a car.
The vehicle hit the Gayton Road Health Centre, in Gaywood near King's Lynn, at around 13:20. It's understood the car is completely inside the building, which had to be evacuated by emergency services.
It's thought that no-one was hurt.
Eight fire crews have been at the scene, and a specialist fire and rescue team is on its way to secure the building.
The former care minister, Norman Lamb, says people with mental health problems are being discriminated against.
The North Norfolk MP says there's a shortage of community psychiatric nurses, detox facilities and a shortage in social care which has hit people with mental health issues.
"People with mental ill health don't have the same right to get treatment on a timely basis as others enjoy," he said. "When I was minister I introduced the first ever maximum waiting time standards but the government isn't funding it... it's always mental health that loses out more than other parts of the system."
BBCCopyright: BBC
NHS England data has shown a 56% rise in the number of bed days lost to delayed discharge in psychiatric trusts in October 2016, compared to November 2015.
The problem is being blamed on a shortage of social care packages, but the government says it has a five year, £400m plan to transform mental health services.
School remains closed until Monday
It's a long weekend for pupils of Methwold Primary. The school closed yesterday because of a broken boiler, and remains closed today.
The school is expected to reopen on Monday.
And in north Norfolk, Sidestrand Hall School also has no heating. The school will be closing while they wait for a part to be delivered.
