Music News LIVE: Remembering Nirvana's Kurt Cobain at 50

Late last year, Martin Garrix topped DJ Magazine's list of its top 100 DJs in the world.

But his new-found celebrity doesn't mean he can skirt the rules around America's strict alcohol laws.

Martin told Radio 1 presenter Cel Spellman he has to be escorted in and out of his Las Vegas residency.

The 20-year-old Dutchman said he preferred working in Ibiza because he's "not allowed to do anything" at his US performances.

"They start my intro and then I'm allowed to get in the club.

"They escort me with security and clear the entire DJ booth and the surrounding VIP tables from alcohol.

"As my last song is playing they kick me out of the club."

We're sure by then he's not the only person being kicked out of the club...

And make no mistake.

The former Oasis and latterly Beady Eye singer has apparently been "listening forward" to his new tunes (trippy man) and clearly likes what he hears.

He's also hinted that fans of his brother's band - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - should be afraid.  Very afraid.

The singer's most successful song-writing effort to date, arguably, came in the form of Songbird off Oasis's 2002 record Heathen Chemistry.

It was the only Liam-penned track that made the Manchester band's double-sided greatest hits record Time Flies.

But are we supposed to read any lyrical meaning into LG's subsequent poetic messages?

He bashed out: "My heart is together my head is exploding why don't you come back to me," followed by something largely unintelligible.

He also wrote: "When they gave you roses and believed your wild excuses you we're [sic] sealing the deal".

Hands behind your backs people, bend at the knees and try snarling one of those lines into the mic.

No, he didn't bring US President Donald Trump with him.

But comeback kid Stormzy has covered the rapper's Ultralight Beam in the Radio 1 Live Lounge.

The track originally appeared on Kanye's latest record The Life of Pablo and featured fellow Chicago star Chance The Rapper. But it gets the Sarf London treatment below.

It was a tough act to follow after indie kids Blossoms went all gangsta on our asses with their 50 Cent cover.

Singer Rick Witter told 6 Music how it was "about time" they recorded some new material as they'd been on the comeback trail for longer than they were together originally.

The family of Christina Grimmie have shared a new track by the late singer.

Invisible is set to appear on an upcoming posthumous album by the former contestant on the US version of The Voice.

She was shot and killed while signing autographs following a concert in Orlando last June.

Christina was 22.

Her family has previously shared the singer's four-part Ballad of Jessica Blue following her death.

Her brother Marcus said: "It's completely and utterly amazing because obviously we were devastated as a family.

"For the first three months, we didn't even do anything, and then around August, I would say, we were like, 'Hey, you know, we have so much music that she's been working on.'"

Well. Of sorts. Being that only fifty percent of the band is actually still alive.

Still it looks like Sir Paul McCartney has been slapping a little bass for his ex-bandmate Ringo Starr for an as-yet-unannounced musical project.

Strong in the emoji game - Ringo tweeted the message below: 

He also tweeted pics of guitarist and former Eagles member Joe Walsh and bassist Nathan East.

A nice one if you're heading out for some lunch now, or in the mood for a post lunch snooze/cuppa.

Max Richter makes music that makes you sleep. And that's not intended as an insult. 

In fact, the German-born British composer and the Barbican in London are inviting people to hear an eight-hour concert during an overnight performance in May.

The event takes place at the Old Billingsgate on 6 May from 23:00 - until 07:00 GMT and ticket-holders will be expected to bring their own sleeping bags.

As a taster, Max and his band popped into the 6 Music studios to play one of their pieces.

Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Kurt and singer Courtney Love, has paid an emotional tribute to her father on what would have been his 50th birthday.

She was not yet two years old when he father was found dead after taking his own life in 1994.

Now a 24-year-old visual artist, she wrote: "You are loved and you are missed".

And though we have yet to hear from Kurt's Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, we felt we had to share this pool pic below which we're sure would make Dave smile.

Many a heart was broken last year when The Maccabees announced their were calling time on their 12 years together.

There was a chink of light for fans when the band subsequently announced they were re-uniting, albeit for just a handful of goodbye shows this year.

Now singer Felix White has told 6 Music that is feels "strange" not to be part of a band that he joined as a teenager and his aims for his new Yala record label.

Rag'N'Bone Man isn't the only debut UK artist to have topped 100,000 sales in the past 12 months.

Nope, last year's biggest seller has just been presented with a Gold Disc for the achievement. Sit down Zayn. Back to school Jack Garrett. Keep on dreaming Blossoms. 

Bradley Walsh was the only UK debut act to release a Gold-selling album last year.

His album Chasing Dreams shifted more than 112,000 copies before the year was out after having only been released at the end of November.

Bradley said he was "totally blown away", adding he was "always in awe of anyone who received a gold disc".

Today, we've both dug out our best plaid lumberjack shirts to commemorate what would've been the 50th birthday of Nirvana mastermind Kurt Cobain.

We don't know what the staff at music licensing organisation PPL are wearing for the occasion but we do know that they've handily produced a list of the top 20 most-played Nirvana tracks on UK radio and TV since the turn of the 21st Century.

Unsurprisingly, tracks from the band’s 1991 multi-platinum selling album Nevermind feature prominently with ten entries in the Top 20, including singles Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come as You Are and Lithium.

The Seattle band had a penchant for a decent cover too and their renditions of songs by Davd Bowie, Dutch band Shocking Blue and Glasgow's finest The Vaselines also make that cut.

You may not know the name Clyde Stubblefield, but you've almost certainly nodded your head or shifted your feet to one of his drums breaks.

The drummer for the Godfather of Soul James Brown has died of kidney failure at the age of 73.

Stubblefield played on many of the classics Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine, Cold Sweat and his iconic solo in Funky Drummer.

It's one of the most sampled drum beats in music history, by the likes of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, N.W.A., The Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre and many more.

Essentially the Toronto *singer is not happy (*whatever you do don't call him a rapper).

He's apparently angry that his fourth studio album Views was placed in the best rap album category at last week's Grammys, which was won by Chance The Rapper's Coloring Book.

Drake won Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance for Hotline Bling.

However, speaking during an interview with DJ Semtex on OVO radio, Drizzy said the track is not rap at all and that he's only actually in that category because of the colour of his skin.

"Even though Hotline Bling is not a rap song... the only category they can manage to fit me in is a rap category" he said.

One man who certainly is a rapper (when he's not busy at politics) is Kanye West and Drake is not happy with him either.

During a gig last year Kanye dissed Drake and DJ Khaled, claiming their music was overplayed on radio stations.

He said: "I think everybody has their own little things going on, I'm not really sure what he's referring to half the time, 'cause in the same breath, I went from being...like working on a project with him, to him sorta publicly ******** on me and DJ Khaled for being on the radio too much."

"But yeah I'm not really sure, everybody's got their own thing going on.

He continued: "I feel like me and Khaled are just good people, I'm not sure why we're the target of your choice that you made that night."

Well it is if you're Lana Del Rey who shared her latest single LOVE over the weekend.

It's the first track to be taken from her new album, which is due out later this year and is set to include some as-yet-unnamed guest artists.

Lana says: "I made my first four albums for me, but this one is for my fans and about where I hope we are all headed"

Born on this day in 1967 in (the other) Aberdeen...it's hard to imagine the Nirvana frontman at 50 isn't it?

Would he have gone solo? Would this be his disco phase? What about the Lady Gaga collaboration? Would the Foo Fighters even exist?

Debbie Harry and team Blondie are to return to London's Roundhouse on 3 May for a gig to launch their forthcoming new album Pollinator.

It's three years after their last triumphant show at the iconic venue, as part of the Apple Music festival but nearly 40 years after they played one of their first UK shows there.
