Leigh Gregory, his wife and children were woken by debris smashing windows of their home in Chester Green, Derby, on Sunday morning.
They found themselves huddled on a top floor for six hours before being able to leave.
Mr Gregory said: "Obviously we could see what was happening through the window - water was coming into the first floor bedroom and a landing window."
The family plan on renting somewhere until they are able to return to their home.
Severn Trent Water has apologised for the issue, which damaged several properties and cars in the area.
