However the ransomware is fake - and clearing the browser cache is actually enough to restore full access.
The attackers demand £100 in the form of an iTunes gift card with the code sent via text message to a designated mobile number, said security firm Lookout in a blog about the malware.
A patch closed the loophole but Professor Alan Woodward, cybersecurity expert at Surrey University said some iPhone users have put off the update because it also includes other changes to the running of the device.
"Some people have held off thinking it sounds fairly major, but obviously if they do that they won't get the protection," he said.

Two jailed for 'act of pure evil' on Scarborough man
Two men have been
sentenced to life in jail
today for beating a 50-year-old man to death in what was described as “an act of pure evil”.

Clifford Honeyman (pictured left), 42, and Andrew
Stevenson, 39, inflicted catastrophic injuries on Richard Walker during the
sustained attack at his flat in Scarborough.
Stevenson will serve at
least 27 years behind bars and Honeyman will serve a
minimum of 24, both denied murder and a three-week trial followed.
After the trial Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn said that their actions had been "extremely violent" and "totally unnecessary".

The husband of Pamela Morris
has made an emotional appeal urging his wife to get in touch.
Mrs Morris has not been seen
since Tuesday and police are growing "increasingly concerned" for her safety.

Officers investigating her disappearance have also released new images of the 61-year-old.
They were captured by CCTV as she boarded a bus for Skipton.
The last confirmed sighting of Mrs Morris was when she left the bus in Skipton at 08:45am on Tuesday 4 April.

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after an attack in Sheffield city centre this morning.

Emergency services were called to West Street at around 03:50 BST after the man was found injured near to Broughton House.
The man may have been in a vehicle that was involved in a collision a short time before the reported attack took place.
A vehicle, thought to be the injured man’s, has been recovered by police.

Users who have not updated their iPhone remain at risk of a ransomware attack where money is demanded to unlock the handset's browser .

"The attack doesn't actually encrypt any data and hold it ransom," wrote its security researchers .
A patch closed the loophole but Professor Alan Woodward, cybersecurity expert at Surrey University said some iPhone users have put off the update because it also includes other changes to the running of the device.
"Some people have held off thinking it sounds fairly major, but obviously if they do that they won't get the protection," he said.
