In a letter to the Secretary of State, Mr Healey called on Chris Grayling "to commission HS2 to undertake a study of the feasibility and benefits of a mainline South Yorkshire station, on the HS2 route rather than on a ‘loop’ of standard rail track in central Sheffield."
He added that he had sought support from HS2 Chair Sir David Higgins for the study but would require the green light from the Transport Secretary before it could go ahead.

HS2 recently announced its intention to shelve plans for a station at Meadowhall, which it said would save £1bn, and instead add a spur line which would run on the existing track into Sheffield Station.
In a separate letter to Sir David Higgins, Mr Healey urged the HS2 Chair to work with Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster councils to address concerns over the proposed route.

He began the speech by calling for a full "Hillsborough-style inquiry" into events at Orgreave during the miners' strike on 18 June 1984.

Should he become the leader of the party and the next prime minister, Mr Smith promised to address the North/South divide by outlining a strategy for the North:
£50bn raised from long-dated government gilts to be invested in Trans-Pennine transport and developing business in the region’s cities and towns
Introducing instead, a new Minister for Labour, with a ministry based in a Northern city such as Sheffield. He said the new ministry would look at delivering fair employment with tax incentives for businesses to relocate to the regions.
